A school self-evaluation of teaching and learning in the area of Numeracy in Scoil Mhuire was undertaken during the period September 2019 - October 2019.
Summary of school self-evaluation findings
With regard to the teaching & learning of Mental Maths and the oral language required in this area of the curriculum, our school has strengths in the following areas:
- Teacher/pupil motivation and openness to improve oral language in this area of the curriculum.
- Access to ICT, high proficiency in ICT and access to hands on materials that facilitate oral language development in Numeracy.
- A positive school environment where planning and collaboration are part of school culture.
- Organised team teaching and blocks of intervention are already widely used.
With regard to the teaching & learning of Mental Maths Strategies and the vocabulary associated with this area, the following areas are prioritised for improvement:
- Coordinated Whole School Plan for Mathematics
- Discrete time for Mental Maths (timetabled)
- Resources
- Continual Professional Development in the area of Ready Set Go Maths (RSGM), Number Sense and Mental Maths Strategies for Addition and Subtraction

Improvement Targets (related to pupils' achievement)
1. Implementation of a structured approach to explicitly teach each of the Mental Maths Strategies for Addition and Subtraction (as outlined in PDST Manual) from 1st to 6th class.
2. That these plans be: - Specific; Measurable; Attainable; Realistic & Time-framed
and that they reflect the context from which this school operates, taking account of pupil background, learning needs and home environment.
3. That there is a structured lesson(s) timetabled for teaching these strategies
4. That the following strategies be implemented for assessment
- sample group consisting of three pupils from each class will be monitored throughout the year
- That the RSGM Profiles for assessing competencies will be implemented as an assessment tool.
6. Professional Development for teachers, facilitated by PDST, throughout the year.
